I watched the press conference from the University of Waterloo and found Professor Donna Strickland funny and charming throughout. I don’t know much about Physics but I really enjoyed her sense of humour and her ease with communicating complex information.

“This is for work done a long time ago”. Specifically research and a paper she wrote and presented in 1984-1985. This paper; the first she published, resulted in the Noble prize. It is also the first time for a first publication to win. She is the first Canadian woman to win a Nobel prize. A trail blazer to the core. She shares the prize with Gerard Mourou and Arthur Ashkin.

Donna Strickland is one of three women to win the Nobel prize for Physics with Marie Curie (1903) and Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1963). She continues her research in lasers and is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo here in Ontario, Canada. Hopefully this prize will expand the possibilities for herself and women in STEM throughout Canada and the world.

The drawing was a real pleasure to work on during this difficult time – I’m so glad of this bright light amongst the clouds.
